Tanya Selvaratnam, Co-Executive Producer
Tanya Selvaratnam was born in Colombo, Sri Lanka and grew up in Long Beach, California. She received her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Harvard University, where she studied Chinese and the history of law. Her graduate thesis on the interplay of law and practice with regard to women’s rights in China was published in the Journal of Law & Politics. While still in graduate school, she began working for the Fourth World Conference on Women in China, serving as the Assistant Youth Coordinator for the NGO Forum on Women, 1995.
On her way back from China to Harvard, she stopped in New York and never left, after she began working with The Wooster Group. Since 1996, she has been an Associate Artist there and is currently in its production of House Lights at St. Ann’s Warehouse in Dumbo. She has also been a member of the Institute on Arts & Civic Dialogue under the directorship of Anna Deavere Smith (1998-9) and has appeared in numerous productions and readings at the Lincoln Center Directors Lab and New Dramatists. Recently, Tanya collaborated with The Builders Association (NY) and Moti Roti (UK) on the multimedia production Alladeen, which toured throughout the world. Last summer, at the Lincoln Center Festival, she performed Remind Me, an excerpt from her novel-in-progress, with DJ Rekha providing the music. The event, curated by DJ Spooky, also featured appearances by Ryuichi Sakamoto, Vijay Iyer, Daniel Bernard Roumain, Nitin Sawhney and Colson Whitehead.
In 2001, Tanya began producing movies, including On_Line (directed by Jed Weintrob) which premiered at the Sundance and Berlin Film Festivals, Domino (a short film, directed by Gabri Christa with music by Vernon Reid, for The Black Filmmakers Foundation Lab), and The F Word (also directed by Jed Weintrob). When not engaged in artistic pursuits, she devotes her time to youth and international causes. She has worked with the Ms. Foundation and the World Health Organization and has served on the boards of The Third Wave Foundation and Groundswell Community Mural Project. Immediately after the December 26 tsunami tragedy, Tanya organized an Artists for Tsunami Relief benefit. The event, which raised $70,000 in one night, featured appearances by David Byrne, Sussan Deyhim, Nelson George, Angela McCluskey, Moby, Lou Reed, Vernon Reid, DJ Rekha, DJ Spooky, and Colson Whitehead.
Jed Weintrob, Director / Producer / Concept
Through The F Word, his second feature film, native New Yorker Jed Weintrob combines his dynamic vision and passion for storytelling with his background in digital technologies and fascination with capturing real life on the street.
Weintrob is also an accomplished video game creator, feature film producer and theatre director. As a pioneer in the early years of interactive entertainment, Jed founded and ran the video game division of the newly launched Orion Pictures. After brokering the successful merger of Orion Interactive with MGM Interactive, he “went on walkabout,” backpacking and bicycling around the world for a year, crossing five continents, and developing the ideas and inspirations for future projects.
Whether it is a hybrid fiction/documentary political drama, a sexy romantic hexagon of life on the Internet, or a cross-genre psychological horror film, Weintrob’s work always focuses on telling unique, wide-ranging stories combining innovative filmmaking technologies with an intimate approach to story and character.
Jed’s feature directing debut, On_Line, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and went on to play the Berlin Film Festival, Cinequest (winner, Best Narrative Feature), Gen Art, Outfest, and numerous international festivals including Puchon, Melbourne, Stockholm, Zurich, Kiev and Rio. On_Line was released theatrically throughout the United States and foreign territories in 2003, on DVD in 2004 and on television in 2005.
Weintrob is an honors graduate of Harvard University, where he first met many of his regular collaborators.
